Ultimate Boxing Series on ESPN5

Thursday, May 16, 2019

A new reality show on ESPN5 was just launched, but this time it won’t be like those other shows will petty drama because all those involved are up and coming boxers. It’s called UBS or Ultimate Boxing Series. The place was filled with world champs and olympic medalists, but we listened in to their conversation.

Two time world champion Gerry PeƱalosa says “Like what other people have said, boxing is our life. I am sure the next superstar of boxing is in this group. We went to different cities across the Philippines and have see so much talent. We need to guide them, discover and expose them to real fights. I will do everything to support them, Manny Pacquiao is also helping us, we are doing the grass roots programs and helping them realize their dreams. We try to check their records, to see them in the flesh and have them try out, we saw how good they were and picked those who have potential, all quality boxers and not just because of their sob story. We don’t have nuisance candidates. We picked those who have at least 10 fights, not less than 3, like amateur standouts. We even have people from the Philippine team, most of them have no loss record. The reason why we chose two weight classes is to make sure we pick quality fights and not confuse viewers if there would be more weight categories. We want quality not quantity. Hopefully we get around 3 wins before they get to the main fight which will be the undercard in the coming Philippine Mexico title fight.”

Our boxers, we are starting this. ESPN5 isn’t just about live events, UBS is going to be like ESPN sports stories featuring the life, their background, how they fight hard in and out of the ring. It is real drama and we hope to put this out hopefully to give honor and prestige to the country. To share the stories and the journey of the athletes, and yes people will relate to us like when we did Kwentong Gilas. This format is open to everybody, we asked Gerry to make this all inclusive and some were able to join, some were not able to do it but we have promoters and stables now in the program. As long as we feel if is relevant, we will continue doing this because it helps a lot in what we are doing in the channel, not just basketball or title fights, we want to show the developmental journey and support all sports programs. We flew the boxers here, we housed them and have logistical plans involved. Maybe in the future we’ll have more.”

This looks so exciting because we’ll get to see how their story would turn out, the fights will also be supervised and they have reserves in case they get into trouble. They have their own managers and trainers, if they hire someone it won’t be much trouble. They also have contracts with each boxer and they will be compensated, they made sure they will be happy. Rules will also be under GAB, so this will be a good fair fight in Novaliches. They will be housed in one roof and they wouldn’t be scripted, just their everyday life on TV. It will premiere on June so stay tuned!

ESPN5 Brings National Cheerleading Championships on Free TV

Tuesday, October 02, 2018

NCC has been doing this since 2006. True enough, our country has leveled up as far as the sport of cheer is concerned. In their season 14, they’re raring to make you feel their theme of “WE ARE FEARLESS”. Imagine, this league will have 300 teams vie for the championship at the 2019 Nationals, doing all things possible to achieve that in CHEER, DANCE and DRUMLINE, choosing who’s the best among the best on March 2019 at the Mall of Asia Arena. All of these will be shown on ESPN5, and includes the regional qualifiers. This is also part of ESPN5’s mission to elevate Philippine sports so they could bring it to the world. This will all be done to groom those who will eventually join Team Pilipinas as they battle it out in competitions from Asia, Oceania, the World Championships too which will be held in Orlando, Florida on 2019. ESPN5 again will be part of their journey, following them all throughout Season 14 and air The Nationals live on FREE TV.

NCC Founder Carlos Valdes says “NCC requires you to face anxiety, nervousness, doubt, but you all have to be fearless. This is cheerleading!”

TV5 President Chot Reyes adds “Fearless” also defines ESPN5’s mission as we support every Pinoy athlete as they come and represent the country on a world stage, it’s why we want to continue our partnership with NCC, to get more world class content on TV5 and see the journey of Team Pilipinas this Season 14. In a very real sense I am the head cheerleader and we can identify with fearless, we have repositioned, we have courage and needed fearlessness. I think we are going to even do better last year because we’ll include the regionals. Being an athlete in college, I know how important this is as the 6th man. This will take us to great heights, on to the world championships! Our job is to bring this to you, hopefully would also generate medals in SEAGames, Asian Games and the Olympics.”

This is the largest Cheerleading league in the country and this is the culmination of the best schools, ESPN5 and NCC will start on the regionals starting October 6. They will be covering these competitions in live streams, social media and TV. If you want to know more, logon to their website NCCPhilippines.com.ph.

ESPN5 Announces Whole Day of Boxing on May 13

Sunday, April 22, 2018

Filipino sports and boxing fans are in for a treat as ESPN5 gives you a whole day of boxing this May 13th which your friends from the Kapatid channel can bring. With their partners ESPN the global leader in sports, they will give you unadulterated Filipino fights that should be on screen, Thrilla in Manila, and even championship bouts that will be streamed from across the globe.

Coach Chot Reyes “For us just being here we should get applauded. I don’t think you’ll see anything like this, a wall to wall LIVE BOXING day on ESPN5 on May 13. Another one in Las Vegas a little later on. We started ESPN greatest fights, Thrilla in Manila, Rocky Marciano, this is really going to be a treat for Filipino boxing fans. We believe in the Filipino fighter, we believe in our boxers. Their stories will be told and we will start with Jerwin Pretty Boy Ancajas. We hope you get to see how our talented boxers started their career. All we could offer is the genuine partnership, not entirely money that the other networks have, but it weeds out those who don't really care for them, or have them in mind. We will continue to promote boxing, Manila is the best place to do that. Everybody knows we can work with other promoters and management, what we know would be good for the boxers we will do it. All of these other sports we will put them on the spotlight, as a Sports channel we will give them these opportunities. We cannot forget Manila. Maraming salamat po!”

AJ Bazooka Banal adds “Everyone in Survival Camp knows they should give their 100%, even more so you can only expect the best when the fight happens.”

Marvin Marvelous Sonsona says “Thanks to team Ancajas for giving me a chance to get this fight, to join survival camp. I promise to show everything, we’ll prepare for all the help they have given us, thank you for supporting us.”

Mark Barriga says “The improvement of power and endurance is so different. We need to last longer on the ring, not just punch it out, to learn to breathe. We work hard with our coach, I’ll also be battling a good boxer judging from what I have seen on record. This training program, I have followed it to a T because I know it will be good for me.”

Jerwin Ancajas says "We both are going to benefit in this fight, we put our name into it. Even if we're both Filipino, we are making history. In the US we will give them a good fight, a Filipino versus a Filipino, we are preparing a lot and have been eager to see who will win when that day comes."

Survival Instinct will happen on May 13 and it will be a great day for boxing but do know this will be a whole month event so they will feature more fights on different dates. The WBA lightweight title fight between Vasyl Lomachenko and Jorge Linares at the Madison Square Garden will air on ESPN5 at 10 a.m. whilst Barriga on the other hand resumes his quest for a world title when he faces Gabriel Mendoza of Colombia. Both are vying for the IBF minimumweight crown. It will happen on SM North Edsa Skydome together with fight of Marvin Sonsona and AJ Banal. Stay tuned!
