Basketball Stars Support Gilas Coach Yeng Guiao

Monday, April 01, 2019

Coach Yeng Guiao is the current Team Pilipinas (Gilas) and NLEX Road Warriors coach. Unbeknownst to most of his sports fans, he’s running for office at the 1st District of Pampanga. He sat down happy to see some of the NLEX Road Warrior players show support in his bid for the said office. Took note of his statements this afternoon.

“I have been a coach for 2 and a half years, in different teams, 7 championships in the PBA and also made the world cup with Gilas Pilipinas. We are preparing for the World Cup in China, where the best of the best will meet. These are good teams but we hope to pull some upsets. There are 4 teams in a group and if we win two games, we are going high in the rankings. Angola is the African champ, Italy and Serbia is world ranked. This time I have a different challenge, to represent the 1st District of Pampanga. I have ran for 3 terms as a Vice Governor of Pampanga, so I have both basketball and politics all my life. This is a challenge, in any way or form, I have an advocacy to have continuous improvement of the Clark Airport which is in my district. We now have more tourists, bills and resolutions have been passed. We now have a new terminal, there are other items like the North Rail too, hopefully work it out so we can run from Tutuban to there and be finished in two years. Clark is also the sports capital of the country, in hosting the SEA Games, this will be true. We have been pushing for this ever since. Hopefully this will benefit much of my constituents, together with the usual things they need for education, health, and life. Clark is progressing because all the places around it us benefiting from it now. We are also doing a lot in improving the educational system, and the health advocacy. The new law applied for universal health care is one example, we support that fully and hopefully we find ways to improve that.”

He adds “Since I am in Basketball I am focused on it but I am a sports fan and enthusiast, to improve the other sports in general is part of that. We need to make every sport especially the ones we excel at be done and officiated better. We want to promote sports with weight categories because we have a lot of talent. I am one of the main authors of giving bigger rewards for sports winners. It is what is being used today. Funding is of course a problem, other countries are spending more but my take is that to concretely make this better, we filed to do an existing law to get 5% of gross to go to sports. Right now, 2.5% is sent to law, while the other half goes to the office of the President and nobody challenged it but I did. I am still waiting for the decision, that is 13-15 Billion pesos and it would be a big help in the yearly income of sports for that. In order to answer to solve it, we need to have that reinstated.”

“Clark has 120,000 employees, improvement of educational system and making them a part of that plus run for more investments in the district will make it a whole lot better. Living a healthy and active lifestyle is the best thing to have rather than us waiting to get sick. I will support legislations to improve the environment. If I win the district, I will still be coaching, I don’t believe we have to stop as long as we can do both. Being disciplined in the management of your time, in basketball and legislation, I have already done that in the last few years and we didn’t have a problem in commitments because I have done both. Politics and Sports have similarities, you cannot go to a game or office unprepared. There are also intrigues, but you have to be emotionally stable, you will see bashers, the pressure is great and you can lose your job. You are only as good as your last term or game, it is part of our job and we have to accept that. It is a competition, you are joining the PBA for results, same with your district, coaching for 30 years, I have seen how it happens and I can focus on service for constituents. It is both stressful, one is for 48 minutes, the other for 3 years. I constituents asking for help 24/7 and you get used to it, to handle it. I am under a local party.”

National Team regular Asi Taulava says “In international competitions, our team, it’s a different game. Our coach as a congressman can boost that. We are all rooting for him.”

Kieffer Ravena says “The short time I have been with them, he is very genuine. He says it when you need to improve on, every opportunity he gets to help in the youth of Pampanga. In my scenario, it would have been easy to let me go but they supported me, it helps to have leaders who gives you confidence to do your own thing. A lot of players know and want to play for him, to become the best person possible, he does it a lot. He makes students be in their best position, I am open to help in his campaign. I believe in what he is fighting for, not because he is my coach, but his sincerity, if he gets elected Pampanga will be benefiting from it.”

“I don’t want to burden them, we have games, it is very important and we want to take ourselves far in this conference. I am concentrating on getting to the finals, when we get there I’ll seek their help in activities. For now we are doing that first.” the coach added.

Gilas Cadets, UAAP Standouts for SMART Elite UAAP and an Exclusive Interview with UE Red Warrior Paul Varilla

Saturday, September 05, 2015

It's UAAP Season 78 and what better way to celebrate it but by recognizing the best of the best players  as SMART the country's biggest network launches Smart Elite-UAAP in Makati. After being in the midst of their counterparts in the NCAA we were only expecting the best players included in this mix and we were eagerly waiting for the names announced that afternoon. We were not disappointed!

Mr. Epok Quimpo, Smart's Sports Senior Manager says "We have tennis, we have badminton, we have football, and Smart has been sternly supporting a lot of sports and come to think of it, why do we have to do a Smart Elite launch? Basically our goal is to impart to the Filipinos how to live a Smart Life. When we say living the Smart Life, it means touching on our passion points. Passion points like entertainment, leisure, travel, you post where you go, like Jordan Clarkson who went to Boracay and his girlfriend a Victoria Secret Angel, she posted a photo in a paraw, she really fell in love with the place. Boom, TJ, and I love international games, we want Filipinos to experience this passion across the nation and we're here to introduce several UAAP standouts in promoting and doing this. We invite everyone to support the athletes in promoting the LOVE for the sport, for the game of basketball. This will inspire kids, the high school, college basketball teams and hopefully represent the country in the international level."

They came out one by one and it was nice to see Gilas cadets Kiefer Ravena of Ateneo De Manila, Kevin Ferrer of UST, Mark Belo of FEU, Gelo Alolino of National University and Prince Rivero of De La Salle University. They are also joined by UAAP standouts Von Pessumal of ADMU, Jette Manuel of UP, Dawn Ochea of Adamson University (he came after practice!) and Paul Varilla of my alma mater University of the East.

Now we didn't get to see Paul Varilla because he had practice schedules that morning so we did the next best thing and asked him questions online. Paul says "I want to thank Smart for selecting me and giving me an opportunity to represent them the best I can. I feel honored to be apart of the Smart Elite team and alongside the other UAAP players. My brother and I use Smart's pocket wifi when we are out and about. I use it every night to connect and chat with my parents abroad. I use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram mostly. I am really looking forward to use Spinnr! For those who want to get in touch, my IG and Twitter handle is @PuffeeP or they can just search for Paul Varilla. I forgot to mention that I do watch a lot of YouTube as well haha! I tried to use streaming accounts from the US but it doesn't stream out here. I've just recently heard of iFlix and I'll check that out for sure! Aw man now it hurts more that I wasn't there haha. I really wish I was in the launch, my apologies but my priorities with the team had to come first in preparation for the first game!" then we exchanged pleasantries.

With Smart's widest coverage, UAAP fans including me will continue to address digital needs by catching games wherever we are in the country. Using our smart phones, Smart, PLDT Home will bring more Filipinos closer to the games and their passion. The players all are heavy internet users, Kiefer and Mac even mentioned how they love Spinnr and iFlix too. Von and Dawn also uses Smart Bro in their quarters so after a game they would be able to get in touch with their families wherever they are, and says it's very convenient since they play in their respective schools and Smart Araneta Coliseum.

For those who want to win make sure you visit the SMART Life booths in the Smart Araneta Coliseum today so you can get the chance to get phones and gadgets unlike those fake Facebook pages I saw yesterday, don't fall for that by the way!.

I'll be at the SMART Araneta Coliseum later to watch the UE Red Warriors battle it out with UP Fighting Maroons. I'm rooting for my alma mater as usual because I'm a full blooded warrior but I'll be cheering for the whole Smart Elite Team too of course. They've done the country proud and even inspired thousands of students, hopefully convert them all to live the Smart Life!

No Harm, No Foul Premieres on TV5

Monday, July 06, 2015

It's been an inside joke to basketball players everywhere, with pun intended when you say No Harm No Foul. It goes to say that what it means is that if you're not into physical sports, then don't play at all. Some even go the mile and say No Blood No Foul but that's another story. TV5 on the other hand would like to play with tons of humor as they started this show just last Saturday and we were at home to watch it.

It's funny because right from the first episode, they introduced the relationships of the characters and from the looks of it, this actually looks quite promising especially for the sports stars included in the cast. Aside from the gigantic and good looking star Ogie Alcasid (who's name is Jawo in the show), he'll be with real deal basketball superstars like Gary David, Beau Belga, Willie Miller and Kiefer Ravena. I really felt there were huge screams at home because some of my friends were fans of Kiefer and from the looks of it, they fit right in on the show. Gary David and Beau Belga didn't hurt anyone during the filming but they look really funny since they play different roles aside from their basketball player duties in the show. Kuya Wil aka Willie Miller would test you with his Taglish anecdotes so listen carefully when he cracks jokes, a thing or two. Jawo played by Ogie had problems in the beginning because he couldn't pay rent anymore and Crispa (played by Tuesday Ledesma) asked him several times to pay for it since he's really behind 6 months on his payment. Her father aka Coach Tim Co played by Yoyong Martirez always sided with Jawo so he could always get away with it. Crispa even went the mile and put all his things outside the apartment but ended up only following her fathers wishes so Ogie just stayed at the end of that argument.

Ritz Azul, Valeen Montenegro and Sophie Albert actually stay in one dance studio and are going to be the vixens of this show. I liked Sophie's character Kim because she'll be the love interest of Kiefer here, and she's also gorgeous, but a little slow. The funny antics would really be loved by many I'm sure, if only Sophie would have been single in real life, like Kiefer is. I'm still a SoVin fan though.

Randy Santiago isn't just the director of this show, he'll play the role of Lebron with his sidekick Wade played by Long Mejia. Their funny antics will grow on you especially Long, he executed and delivers lines like a genius, he's really funny but I hope he's going to work real hard with slapstick moments just like in the past. Now just imagine the cast I just mentioned and put them in one show, that ladies and gentlemen will be the start of something big as you'll get to watch them every week now on TV5! The July 5 episode was definitely funny and I hope they get more natural as the coming episodes show 8PM every Sunday on the happiest network!
