ALEX CALLEJA and THE COMEDY CREW to Perform at Dubai Comedy Festival

Saturday, March 23, 2024

I could have made a book out of the conversations we had with The Comedy Crew and Alex Calleja a few nights ago.  Aside from the laughs, we had a glimpse of the serious side of this emerging industry. We got schooled about how they've managed to survive the pandemic and the tough industry per se. Alex is no stranger to comedy, he's been doing this for ages that much of the comedians in his team attested they watched him when they were in primary school (emphasis on he's that old).

Aside from Alex Calleja, The Comedy Crew is composed of Israel Buenaobra, Mak Navarez, Jeps Gallon, Yuki Horikoshi, Winer Aguilar, Doc Ramon Cabochan, Anthony Andres, Dawit Tabonares, Rex Milora, Grease Junio, Schneider Maxino, Marlon Cadag, Franz Opinaldo, Victor Obera, CS Dela Pena, Professor David Blattner, Jimberly Villanueva and Trixie Corpez.

Here's some serious stuff we talked about first during the press conference

Here's where Alex Calleja shared why he should tell new comedians about changing their acts and not commit career ending mistakes early on as part of The Comedy Crew

Here's some of the jokes they cracked that evening!

Alex is behind the countless comedy shows in different networks. You could say he had his baptism of fire in the late 2000's and learned the ropes. He knew where comedians failed (shared his secrets so they don't make career ending decisions) and made sure no one is left behind. This sparked the formation of The Comedy Crew. These dudes are funny AF, and we had them do a few samples of their kind of comedy during the press conference. Yes, it's quite cerebral. I asked if they see the need to educate the Filipino crowd  but he says "First of all, it's not the fault of the audience if they didn't laugh at out jokes. The fault is ours. There's no such thing as an uneducated audience, it's our responsibility to adjust. If you know your audience, you choose a joke appropriate for them. That's the wrong mentality. It's like having them watch a movie and if they didn't like your soundtrack... it's not going to be their fault. You need to impress them with whatever genre you produce. You are paid to perform and if they don't laugh at your jokes, it's the comedians fault. It's why we have house rules at the beginning of the show. We use our voice most of the time, and we only ask for the audience's attention by turning off their phones for the duration of the show. We also tell them to tell us if they get offended in one or more acts, we also ask much of the crowd to occupy the front seats because it'll be a mess when they arrive late, we don't want that to happen. We only ask for people to be on time, and that's enough. In fact, I didn't know we were going to talk like this during the press con, I almost want to cry instead of promoting our show in Dubai."

It's so nice to see our brand of comedy will be seen on an international stage and these guys are crazy good.

For those who would want to experience their antics and kind of comedy, Alex and The Comedy Crew (Israel Buenaobra, Jeps Gallon, Mark Navares and Imah Dumagay) is performing at the Comedy Masala in Singapore from March 25 to 26 (sold out shows) and at the Dubai Opera this coming April 13 (Saturday) as part of the celebrations of Dubai Comedy Festival. You can get tickets for the Dubai event from dubaicomedyfest.ae. They also have a show in The Astbury in Poblacion on April 6 at 7PM and Laughtrip Olongapo-Subic (a tour) on March 29, 30, 31 at The Palace in Olongapo, Cork Room at Subic Bay and Source Coffee in Subic too.

Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Andy Murray and other TennisSuperstars in IPTL Manila: A Success!

Sunday, November 30, 2014

Today was an early salvo for my birthday. It's not December yet at the time I'm writing this piece but when someone invited me to come over Mall of Asia Arena, I never thought my Tennis fan dreams would come true. I'm sure you've seen some of the greatest tennis players in the world on TV, but this time we're seeing them live! Yes, the IPTL league is in the country and they've brought along tennis greats such as Maria Sharapova, Ana Ivanovic, Kiki Mladenovic, Philippousis, Kohlschreiber, Huey, Tsonga and a lot more. I even got word that Serena Williams arrived today. Do we even absorb that? Do we even realize what we're watching? I know, it hasn't really sunk in yet for me either.

OMG World's #1 Serena Williams!

These past few days, I get chills seeing the gorgeous Masha on cable tv. Her gorgeous face, her height, I get confused sometimes because she's way beautiful than some titled queens I know, even if she's not wearing any make up. I sighed a few more seeing her hit those ground strokes that speed faster than cars in EDSA and streets going to the malls. I remember saying expletives while watching her matches with team Manila Mavericks at home and I didn't care there were strangers either.

Mark Philippoussis wins for Manila Mavericks on Men's Singles

Filipino American Huey and partner Tonga won the Men's Doubles for the Manila Mavericks!

Arnel Pineda passed by. Yes I missed taking his photo because I was busy watching Murray on the court :)

Andy Murray and his partner wins on Mixed Singles. Looks like Andrew Garfield no?

Serena Williams is now battling with Kirsten Flipkens but I'm sure you know who will win.

I love Serena but not as much as Masha :) but she sure is a talented player, she doesn't play around when she's inside the court.

"It was overwhelming when I came out, it was tough but I had fun playing" says world's number one Serena Williams.

Watching here live, was something surreal for me, much like what her fans were feeling in Manila. It was good she felt like a rockstar everytime she had to walk on the court and sidelines, I think every fan had that notion of making her welcome every second she's here. I've seen several guys getting their stuff signed and I too was dying to at least get a load of that. I'd prolly die interviewing her (well almost that is). Today is the last day but I felt these guys went thousands of miles around the world and get here just to make us happy. That fact alone put a smile on my face (a silly grin even) when I don't even smile on photos. Even if the Manila Mavericks didn't win, I was still ecstatic to see Masha winning individual matches, they also were tough to beat in these matches, sort of "giving them a good fight" was totally okay with me and winning was just a bonus! (As if I had a say on that! Haha!)

With what it's worth, seeing these guys play the matches of their life on court was probably one of the ways they say "Thank You" to all of us. You must understand, they only do this a couple of years and they're spending part of it in Manila. At least that'll put us on the map of go to places, and if heaven permits we would learn a couple or two things on hosting or playing the sport. Will Filipinos pick up after this scene? I don't know, nevertheless, I was inspired and I'm sure thousands of kids too.

Andy Murray saying a few things after he won the Men's Singles for Manila Mavericks

That's when it hit me, IPTL makes dreams come true! Starting here in Manila was but a humongous task but they did it without hesitation because as they were finding answers, the Manila crowd answered with sold out crowds in the 3 whole days they were here. That puts all doubts to rest, and when the event was done I heard they promised that they'll take IPTL back next year! Isn't that awesome news? I might not have been able to see Maria Sharapova today but maybe she'll be back next year. Who knows? I might see her then!

Thank you IPTL for the chance to see these Tennis superstars in the Philippines, thank you for making our tennis wishes come true!

3D VIZION: Changing the Advertising Landscape Worldwide!

Sunday, January 15, 2012

Before I do give you first dibs on this one, let me ask you something. Do you know what 2D or 3D is?!

Photobucket

A 2 dimensional figure would only show you 2 sides; a flat surface; this actually accounts for mostly all the posters, tarpaulin ads you see on the street which doesn't really do anything because its plain and simple. 3D on the other hand makes this a whole lot different. You get depth of field and you get a perspective. Now with that already out, have you seen 3D Vizion?!

Seeing a glimpse of the future this would only mean that things will change in the landscape of the entire advertising industry. You will see a lot of things in a different way. Ms. Katrina Bantug, 3D Vizion's CEO and President talked about this huge change and how they want to do it in the Philippine landscape. This is somehow a redesign of how we do advertising; but when I saw what she was talking about this happened!

We saw 3D advertising for the first time and can't believe how far it popped out of the screen. Imagine beer commercials with the actual can out of the picture floating in your living room or your favorite mall! How about going to the casino with all the chips floating in midair after you hit the jackpot?! Your favorite cartoon series and the fight scene outside the TV sets like you are right beside them while kicking and punching. Some characters even rode an airplane and you can literally see the plane with its wings sticking out of the screen. Some way, somehow you feel it, you see it and you know why people open their mouths this much because of one thing. That's 3D Vizion!

I can't describe how much I love the experience of seeing this up close, these photos really do no justice. I didn't have to wear those unhygienic 3D glasses anymore. It's just so AMAZING in one word!

They have indeed studied the market and with this installed in almost every single corner where there is traffic, they saw a substantial amount of increase in catching the attention of the consumers. Imagine now if you were the company or person who got your product out in the market with this technology which is estimated to be 10 years ahead of it's time. You will get the mileage you need for the amount of money you spend for advertising. It's going to make every cent count and that's going to mean a lot of savings. Soft and pretty.

What's also great is that this particular venture is Filipino owned. The corporation is founded by Katrina Bantug, Mohan Kulkarni with DEMIKK Holdings, Inc. and the brand is represented by Ruben Tiu. It's definitely a relief that this technology and its use is not going to someone else's hand. It's just one thing to be proud of after another. If you want to take advantage of 3D VIZION please check out their website http://3dvscreens.com/ and blow away the competition! Don't be afraid to try it out and call them for a demo! I'm sure whoever gets first hand on what they offer would surely lead the pack!
