Paolo Onesa: Pop Goes Standards

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Paolo Onesa sung before us during a small bloggers gathering at the MCA offices in Ortigas. To tell you honestly I didn't know him that much other than he performed during The Voice Philippines. I had my own personal favorite that time and only rooted for one but it didn't matter later on because my bet didn't win haha. Anyway, I'm always up for anything so I listened in. This is his way of introducing himself and from the looks of it, he's bound to be a good one.

Apart from the fact that he's a looker, he sounds so much better singing some tunes. In this album, he's doing some pop songs and treating it with a standard style. If you know Richard Poon, he sounds mighty close to that. Not that he's competition but I guess MCA wants to present him as a younger version since that is pretty much his genre of music. While in the competition, he was actually advised to find his niche because he was pretty much everywhere in terms of music. When he wanted to finally concentrate on one genre, this was really a good match.

He wanted to sing more originals and some of the difficult songs that divas usually sing. He even did a spin on Love on Top which was sung by Beyonce and it sounded good. This album was a split between what he wanted and what MCA heeded he does as far as song choices are concerned. No arguments though because after all the arrangements were done, it was all good. I went and listened to the tracks these past few days and I guess they've achieved what they wanted to do. It was relaxing, something that you would want to be played at the end of the day when you want to just put up your feet and get a well deserved rest. It could actually even pass as a zen song for spa's but it'll probably be those youngster frequented places.

While we were interviewing Paolo, his tone reminds me of Matteo Gudicceli. He's young, so he feels like he's a sponge and is willing to actually learn what this industry has in store for him. He's a bit shy but he knows how to crack jokes when needed. That implies he's a smart one.

His album contains 10 tracks and is available online including iTunes

Lucky In Love
You Are So Beautiful
Make You Feel My Love
Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me) featuring Klarisse de Guzman
Marry Me
You're Beautiful
When I Was Your Man
Which Way, Robert Frost?
Skyfall
Elesi

I strongly suggest though that you get the physical CD because it's way better to have a hard copy. Digital gets lost these days but if you're just buying single tracks, that could be the better option. Thanks to MCA Music for letting us get to know Paolo Onesa! He's bound to charm his way into your heart soon!

Myk Perez: My Acoustic

Monday, March 24, 2014

Myk Perez from famed Voice of the Philippines' first batch just recently launched his album entitled Myk Perez: My Acoustic under MCA Music Inc. Honestly, he wasn't my favorite finalist because I was rooting for Klarisse all the time and even voted for her during the show. I was swayed by my taste of vocals I guess and spent the whole season hating the other contestants because I wanted my bet to win. Myk Perez always had his votes high during the competition and I must say it's with something really worth that attention because 1) He had a solid following being the only guy behind the guitar kind of performer 2) He had Bamboo as the coach and 3) He had this Bamboo-Jason Mraz kind of feel on him that makes the girls go gaga over his performances. It was evident back then that he was going to be a force to be reckoned with and now he's showing us why on this album.

He's got covers on this album including Easy originally performed by Lionel Richie, Two is Better Than One, Why, Runaway originally performed by The Corrs, Clarity, Honey Under The Moon, Fix You, Chasing Pavements, Give Me Love, Baby I Love Your Way and a bonus track Fix You as an unplugged version. He performed live that evening when we interviewed him at the MCA Universal office and I must say, he definitely has it.

You must give him a chance to show you why he's one of the finalists in The Voice of the Philippines and I did just that. I was impressed by what I've heard on the CD and even better when I heard him sing live. I felt I sounded like him on most occasions but I must be dreaming. He's gone way better than when he did his stints in The Voice and with these covers that are quite familiar already with Filipinos, he's surely going a long way. I hope radio stations and TV appearances can give this guy a boost. He's a humble chap and he deserves all the blessings he's getting.

Congratulations on your first album Myk Perez! I'm looking forward to the next one with original compositions soon!

Shane Filan Tops Philippine Charts with Everything To Me Album!

Tuesday, October 08, 2013

Shane Filan who was here a few days ago treated us all to entertainment and his presence at the SM Megamall in Manaluyong City, Philippines. I've been following him since Westlife days and I'm so glad the guys are still friends after all these years. Shane tells us quite a bit of the economics behind the band which caused their breakup after the last tour. Who wouldn't be sad seeing them go separate ways.. there's always a little thing that hurts when you think about it.

Ladies from local radio stations hosted the event and had Shane Filan on his feet. The usual questions were asked but some very surprising ones came from online media. (That includes me of course!) My brother is Irish and he's in Dublin for the longest time. I felt I had to ask Shane if he's ever been to Guiness which my brother is as the Executive Chef. Shane uttered, he's been there because he enjoys a pint or two of beer which that place is known for. I had to ask that because it was just after Arthur's Day in Ireland, a local holiday for them. For those who don't know, Westlife has been the pride of this country. They even go the mile in expressing these guys came from that country right after you step inside their airport. Much like Pacquiao is for us Filipinos.

He was quite happy to see the reception of Filipinos; saying they're still warm and just the same as when he was here years ago. He misses everything that he experienced here and was surprised some of the fans know exactly how many times they've been in the Philippines and where exactly they performed. It was like a quiz show when questions were thrown.

His music changed quite a lot. I can't say it's purely pop like when they used to do it with Westlife because it's got more of a native Irish tune to it. I guess Shane made it a point to go back to his roots and shape his path a little different than what we're used to. I must say, it looked very cool in my books since it's quite easy to listen too. Less complicated and easier to love. He's been working with quite a lot of lyricists and musicians and admittedly says it's pretty hard to be a frontman. He still needs the talent of a lot of people behind every song and music that plays on all his gigs.

A few days ago we got confirmation that Shane Filan's album entitled Everything To Me has topped the Philippine Astro Charts beating regulars like One Direction, Korean Boybands and various artists from Star Records for OPM. Quite a remarkable feat for a comeback but this is really going to make Shane's bid a solid one whilst he goes solo. He's a talented chap and he truly deserves to be in this place in the music industry! Congratulations Shane Filan! Stay awesome!
