Freeway + F. Sionil Jose (National Artist for Literature) = Bliss!

Francisco Sionil Jose + FREEWAY Event The Row, Glorietta 5 May 31, 2011

W
hen the heavens above decided to bless me dearly it made sure that I get everything that I want and MORE. I just met an awesome lot of people from FREEWAY’s launch of National Artist Collectors’ Series Fall 2011 Collection honoring the National Artist for Literature F. Sionil José. I just finished reading his book "To the Young Writer and Other Essays" yesterday (signed by the great writer too!) and learned a lot why people adore him and his works. If you don't get the idea, think about this: he's got these books translated in 22 different languages; released internationally. Critically acclaimed by the most discerning book reviewers here and abroad. Take a look at what some of them said here:

"...the foremost Filipino novelist in English... his novels deserve a much wider readership than the Philippines can offer. His major work, the Rosales saga, can be read as an allegory for the Filipino in search of an identity..."

- Ian Buruma, The New York Review of Books

"Sionil José writes English prose with a passion that, at its best moments, transcends the immediate scene. (He) is a masterful short story writer..."

- Christine Chapman, International Herald Tribune, Paris

"...America has no counterpart to José - no one who is simultaneously a prolific novelist, a social and political organizer, and a small scale entrepreneur...José's identity has equipped him to be fully sensitive to the nation's miseries without succumbing, like many of his characters to corruption or despair...

- James Fallows, The Atlantic Monthly

"...The reader of his well crafted stories will learn more about the Philippines, its people and its concerns than from any journalistic account or from a holiday trip there. José's books takes us to the heart of the Filipino mind and soul, to the strengths and weaknesses of its men, women, and culture.

- Lynne Bundesen, Los Angeles Times

That's just the tip of the iceberg! I'm not surprised though that he has been given several international awards and also the National Artist for Literature in 2001. People have also been clamoring for his inclusion in Nobel's Prize for Literature (which I also asked about during the event) and he gamely agrees with them too. He said that the honor would not be for him alone; it was for the country; and the prize at stake wouldn't be a joke either! What initially made me surprised though was the fact that Freeway is going to inspire some of their pieces with his novels. How that is going to work? I'm as clueless as you are but when I saw them there, it was REALLY nice!

Fashion + Literature Icon = Freeway

The intricate details and words printed on the dresses all worked! This is the first time that I saw how they do this; now it makes sense. In fact, there were other pieces there with inspiration from Larry Alcala and other well known Philippine designers. This is how Freeway pay homage to Philippine Icons and sure enough, Francisco Sionil Jose was well worth it!

The famous F. Sionil Jose

The event was also hosted by Prima Ballerina (Ageless!) Ms. Lisa Macuja-Elizalde!

Ermita and another novel was read by the talented, classy and sophisticated Ms. Cherie Gil!

Lourd Ernest Hanopol de Veyra also an awarded poet in his right also read one of F. Sionil Jose's books from the Rosales Saga.

The Man himself answered questions from the audience! We even ran out of questions! LOL!

Thank you so much to Freeway who continue to recognize and pay homage to our National Artists, you should be proud of what you are doing for the Filipino consumer!

So go ahead and grab those F. Sionil Jose inspired dresses and shirts at Freeway stores nationwide!

NUFFNANG: XMEN First Class

Friday, June 03, 2011

Yes the lines were this looooong!!!!

Free ice cream too!!!

The time to look at our past is one thing that I don't have the time for because of my busy schedule but I'm so glad that I got to attend an event this Friday that made everything worth the wait. I watched XMEN First class courtesy of Nuffnang Philippines and Happee toothpaste. It was awesome! I like the story, I like their powers and one day I will try to show them my mutant powers LOL. Well for what its worth I do have that but I need to discover it... Maybe it'll come sooner or later !

I'm kinda hating my IPad now... Or any apple product for that matter because of the lack of Flash support. It made photo uploading doubly hard. I couldn't even browse a file for cryin out loud. Anyway as for the movie I really really enjoyed it because it was a time of fun and a time to enjoy with other bloggers from the Nuffnang community.

I even brought my folks along and it was really a great time for bonding... At least that's what I felt there. I wouldn't want to rain on the parade because of all the days where the movie house lost air conditioning this was It. Yeah I just had to go out a couple of times because of the heat and the smell of someone near me. The parking situation didn't help either LOL. I love Nuffnang, Happee and xmen still!!!

Thank you so much Nuffnang!!!

Sing Your Way to Ireland!

Wednesday, June 01, 2011

I must admit; I haven't been religiously practicing my vocal chords lately but yeah I've done quite a number of drinking sessions and karaoke nights in my lifetime. Music has been part of the Filipino culture and true enough we've had tons of champions in the past!

With that in mind, why haven't we joined the Karaoke World Championships? Yes, there is a competition with that name and I'm sure they are just as threatened now that KWC Philippines Inc. has got the license to get the Philippines represented this year! They are now holding auditions looking for that Male and Female Champion that will go to Killarney, Ireland later this September. There will be no professional singers allowed! So your chance is as good as mine!

How do you join the KWC Trials?

To join the Philippine Trials for the 2011 KWC to be held from September 8 to 10 in Killarney, Ireland, you must purchase WOW Concerto, WOW Mabuhay, WOW Fiesta, WOW Music Video Pack, or a WOW Song Video Pack within the period of May 1 to June 30, 2011.

Only buyers of WOW Videoke products during the promo period or their nominees (call them so they can find you a donor too!) are eligible to join the KWC Philippine Trials.

To see the complete Wow Videoke promo mechanics CLICK THIS.

Register for KWC Trials

If you have already purchased a WOW Videoke within the promo period you can simple register here. CLICK THIS.

The daily trials for Philippine contestants will be held from May 30 to July 9, 2011, from Monday to Saturday 9 AM to 6 PM. The KWC Daily Trials venue at 1081 EDSA, Balintawak, Quezon City (formerly AMWAY Building). I went there with some blogger friends too last Saturday and yes we did try to join the competition. Unfortunately because of my good looks and awesome voice I got to stand as a judge instead LOL!

Hosting the event was Jayson and Ana of Karaoke World Championship Philippines!
Three things to accomplish is to join the KWC and get that coveted crown, get local contestants for the Male and Female Category and host the next one in the Philippines!

The bloggers showed how it's done and tried to sing out their competition! As you can see they really tried!!! LOL
Winning the contest for the bloggers was Kenneth Ignacio, congratulations! =)

Yes the CEO and KWC also gave away prizes to the bloggers who joined the contest!
Of course you need to practice more at home then audition in the Daily Trials to get to Ireland! ^_^

Need I say more? I thought so! So if you know you're doing good singing those songs at home, try your luck and join the competition now!

I'd like to take this bit and thank everyone at Karaoke World Championships, Breville, WOW Videoke, Sennheiser and these guys!

Kapish!?

VISUALZINE Art+Fashion Public Exhibition Culminating Party

VISUALZINE Art+Fashion Public Exhibition Culminating Party

I am so blessed! I got the chance to meet my Sensei's Xander Angeles and Niko Villegas again. This was in an event by The Fashion Academy Manila called VISUALZINE Art+Fashion Public Exhibition Culminating Party; and of course I wouldn't miss this for the world! A lot of celebrities, models and people from the fashion industry who attended the event to celebrate things to come from The Fashion Academy Manila and this new photo-magazine.

Maxene Magalona makes history as she graces this one's cover. She didn't hold back and ravaged out of that teen image with high fashion poses in all her glory.

"It's time!" as Maxene says and because she trusts the guys behind this epic project i.e. Raymond Guttierrez and Xander Angeles. The outcome has definitely shown what my Sensei Xander and his team can do with the simplest image and awesome lighting he's known for. You should all get a copy, it's a good conversation piece/coffee table book equivalent if I may say so.

Bubbles Paraiso, Xander Angeles, people from Team Manila Graphics (sorry name recall is another trait I'm not good at) and my other Sensei Niko Villegas having fun at the launch! Yes, if you see them Raymond Gutierrez and Frank Magalona is at the back. I have other shots so you'll see em there!

Oh there! Maxene Magalona, very pretty in person! Tim Yap who hosted the show and Raymond Gutierrez in his Art Directorial debut.

Here are some of my Sensei's works shown in The Podium as part of the public exhibit

(No copyright infringement intended, just for show; all works shown are by Xander Angeles)

My apologies for the flare (intended) just to show I took these shots from large prints shown in the event. Prints are by Epson.

Ms. Ruffa Gutierrez with her hair blown out; and very nice bokeh.
Gorgeous Georgina Wilson, simple and elegant.
Coming out of the shadows, Lovi Poe. Really nice seeing her in a different light.
KC Montero in this Emo moment. Who would have thought he's got it like this! =)
John Hall, very masculine indeed.

How can anyone not love Solenn Heussaff... what a sight to behold!
I love this one specifically, I love the intended streaks of flares and the lights around her. Think about how much light they used on this one... it made me think heheh =)
This is Frank Magalona, son of the Master Rapper Francis M. Nice and hot huh? Girls like him a LOT!

Look at Maxene Magalona here, she definitely knows what she's doing...
Wham Bam High Fashon overload!

Now do you see why I idolize my Sensei? =)

Aside from photography, there are a lot of classes available in The Fashion Academy Manila for different levels of Advanced Photography, Fashion Styling, Ramp Modelling, Print, Graphics Design, High Fashion/Editorial and Personality Development among others. I suggest you look into these options for your companies; you might need to get their services for your employees. Learning from industry experts (with tons of practical experience) would give you the edge and that X Factor people look for at these times. It makes your people a whole lot better in the long run!

Excited for the next issue? Look out for who's gonna be in the cover!

Need I say more?!

Kapish?! =)
