Read, Eat, Drink at Red Garlic Bistro Cafe!

Wednesday, September 21, 2011

I go to restaurants and establishments and taste their signature dishes. It actually makes sense to do that because you'll know why they became famous. It's a benchmark of their success. You'll end a meal understanding the whole purpose of their existence. That's why I loved what I saw when I got to taste Chef Vincent Rodiguez's creations for Red Garlic. It's a new restaurant opening on October 1, 2011 in Katipunan, Quezon City. Let me show you why you are so lucky!

You gotta see this!

The "Gummy Worm" Cocktail - This first served semi spiked drink with a White Whisky base, banana shake, milk and grenadine was a conversation piece on its own. It has a cute gummy worm hanging on the side. It's tastes like bubblegum! Sweet and very original. A fun way to start off a surprise menu! :)

Potato Wedges and Country Mayo - These are thick cut potato wedges and their own take on a garlicky ranch dressing. Really good. I initially thought the potatoes was the star of this dish but was a bit surprised when I tasted the dip. It was good!

Santiago Taco Poppers -
Chili con carne filling with a spicy kick! I adore spicy food and with this as an appetizer shying away from that cheese we usually expect on dynamites... this is definitely better. I remember stuffed chili from Texas tasting a bit like this before. This is one great alternative for the usual.

Alaskan Salmon Roll- deep fried with rock shrimp, wasabe and salsa; this awesome combination smothered in perfectly cooked salmon was a hit! For the weight watchers this would be something you guys should try out. Definitely something you would order for a date. :)

Red Iced Tea - not the same iced tea you see in run of the mill restaurants. It's nothing like that of the other one in the fastfood joint you thought about. This is sweet and a little tangy, very close to raspberry. It's something good to wash down those steak traces LOL!

Tore del Greco - It's Pizza beyond the ordinary. Arugula, shrimp, parmesan, lime vinegarette in thin crust, plus my favorite sun dried tomatoes, melted mozzarella too. It's a little peppery because of the Arugula. It definitely started us well.

Tornado Roll - Indian chicken tikka, sushi roll with sea weed, wasabe, cucumber, cilantro. Even though Chef Vincent is not connected anymore with Torch, he's making waves with his Sushi line. It's a good thing he's going to open up Red Garlic. Definitely another place to check out soon, right ladies?

Shrimp Pomelo Salad - Crispy Adobo flakes on top, served with Saigon sweet chili sauce, pomelo and crisp lettuce. The DIET just became adventurous! =)

Basilica is on the top left, Philly Cheese Steak on the lower right.

Philly Cheese Steak and Basilica -2 pizzas in one this time. Angus beef, cheese, sweated onions; need I say more?! Half of the pizza was dedicated to Basilica - Smoked Italian sausage, mushrooms, mozzarella cheese. It was the best pizza I have ever tasted. This was my favorite on the menu! The Red Garlic plans to have 12 pizzas on this menu; and we got to only try three. Just remember when they open this fact: this is my favorite among anything I tasted that evening.

Alboro Pasta with Prosciutto Ham and Bacon - this is definitely intended to be shared. I love how Spaghettini was actually the pasta used. The thinner pasta made it lighter but still catch those Extra Virgin Olive Oil based sauce!

Santorini Penne Pasta - Shrimp and Crab in Tomato and White Sauce. How can you even go wrong with Shrimp and Crab together in one dish. This is a very filling dish preferably for men who want something that would comfort themselves on a stormy night. Serve this hot and BAM! That's how you do pasta!

Sardinia Pasta - Oil based home made sardines. Yummy! The Bangus/Milkfish was fat and juicy. If this was more spicy I'd take it home LOL

Grilled Pork Chop with Mango Chipotle - Sweet Mango and the hottest chipotle chili covered the pork chop with cranberries on top. The Pork was tender, someone even stole the bone while we were dining.

WARNING: The porkchop was actually almost 2 inches thick! I'm not joking! It's a real steal!

PROOF:

Then comes this shocker!

Tequila Lime Barbecue Beef Ribs
- This is served with sidings of potato wedges. It's sweet and a little salty (which is just the way I like my ribs). It's very tender and it literally falls off the bones. The complexity of getting this perfect, it finds its own voice on roasting this for hours and having the Chef's own prepared dry rub. You will have to write your name on paper because you might forget yourself once you get to experience this! It's a humongous slab!

Tomahawk - US Angus Beef with a dry spice rub, almost 2 inches thick too, VERY thick and SOOO juicy. The Red Wine Sauce plus Peppermint dressing complements this awesome steak. I want this medium rare that is my preference. This was done well done. Very good... I'd recommend this to die hard steak lovers. You should NEVER miss this!

Salmon Duo - Have two flavors - Basil Pistachio, Smoked Habanero Cream which is a good Date themed dish. I loved the habanero part. The Basil and Pistachio portion reminds me of Pesto, pretty darn impressive!

Thai Bagoong Fried Rice with Sweet Pork - People know how different Thai and Filipino cuisine is and we really have begun to like it. It's that same thing that we love but the Thai version seem a little bolder; and more flavorful than ours. This take on the Thai Bagoong Fried Rice was sweeter; and the strips of mangoes cut through the fat we ingested with the past dishes. You should have this with the steak if you love rice with it. I'm a purist though and I like my steak as is.

Salpicao Medallions - Beef Salpicao using beef tenderloin medallions wrapped in bacon just spells CRAZY. It is somewhat sinful but so yummy in all the right places. It was tender and kept hot by the granite grill it was served with. If you opt to have a smaller steak get this one!

Thai Green Curry - Just put a couple of bowls of rice and there's no more arguing about this dish. It's fresher, more light than usual Filipino chicken curries. Not too spice and perfect for those who prefer a soothing broth than an overwhelming one.

Batanes Roulade - Steamed fish (cream dory) stuffed with laing and shrimp on a coconut cream based sauce. If you love your Laing, this is the one you should look for. A twist on the usual roulades adding a Filipino flair to it. I'd like to have this on weekends regularly. The fish was soft and the coconut cream was thick and creamy I love it! =)

Bread Pudding - Pound cake with custard cream and caramelized table sugar on top, its close to heaven and the flavors of crem brulee. Loving every spoonful of it. Filipinos tend to shy away on bread pudding because they thing it's all stale bread but this one isn't even getting a hint of the bread because it was so soft and the custard gave it a flan like consistency. This is actually their best seller so don't go out of Red Garlic without getting this one for dessert!

Hush Puppies - Rounded re-fried buttermilk batter with caramel and a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream on the side. It was perfect to end the meal with something this sweet.

Fruit in Mascarpone Cheese - If you prefer something light this is the way to go. I love how the amount of fruit was enough for the mascarpone cheese the Chef prepared. Others usually overwhelm us with the cheese but the Chef knew what we wanted. The perfect balance.

Carrot Cake - It was sweet and I like how the strips of Carrot in this case was a little big than usual so you still get to taste the vegetable. The cinnamon, nuts and frosting was something you would definitely adore; I recommend you get another one and share with a friend. It's worth it!

In Hindsight...

Chef Vincent Rodriguez is an Ilocano born Chef and might have gone without formal training; but he passionately loves food. He actually didn't have a menu but this sit down dinner was actually full of surprises. This posh dining experience was one of the best if not THE BEST! The menu is a fusion of Tex-Mex and Asian flavors so if you adore both of them in an authentic way, you should definitely try out Red Garlic as soon as it opens on Katipunan on October 1st!

Read, Eat and Drink. That's how the word term "RED" falls on this occasion. I had the best meal I've ever had in years... why should you deprive yourself from having one too?!

Red Garlic
218 Blueridge A Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City

P.S.

Make sure you ask about their catering services. They can accommodate buffet or sit down dinners. Ask for it and they'd probably have it! Their interiors were designed by the partners and you are sure you'll be getting the ambiance you are looking for. Chef Vincent Rodriguez is not connected anymore with TORCH. If you loved what you saw there, it might be a better thing to visit Red Garlic instead.

I'd Love To Be NaughTEA for Bon AppeTEA

Tea has been an essential part of any meal in the Asian region. Without this ingenious beverage made from different species or blends of dried dark golden leaves life wouldn't have been pleasurable in those times. There's one more to add to this great experience right at the heart of Ortigas Center, promptly named Bon AppeTEA!

Bon AppeTea plays around with the French term for "Good Appetite" but it does make a lot of sense when you call it with that. When we went to the Strata 2000 branch a few days ago and I got to taste what they have been enjoying there all these time.

Are you ready for this?! =)

Purple Royale - it was COLD and REFRESHING but comfy, much like comfort food! :)

Imagine the full bold flavors of root crop Taro and strong brew of Assam Black Tea. Together, I took a sip and closed my eyes. It made perfect sense. It was very calming, not too sweet and VERY refreshing. You get to taste that black tea hard at the background on each small gulps. Those small tapioca pearls included in their drinks was sweet, I loved em so much I asked for second servings. This was just the first salvo; I was in for more!

Not for the faint heart, this is what they call a NaugTEA. It is naughty!

In response to the call of people who adore partying they have great versions of cocktails which I love! You won't get caught at work because after all you are sipping tea. Small slivers of alcohol infused solids sink to the bottom of your cup. It was light and sweet, the bitterness didn't really show but you know you are getting the real thing if you sip the strips of tequila jelly. You have that alcohol fix in no time! The price point ain't that high either so for those who want to make this experience A WILD PARTY OF YOUR OWN!

It's a Party in a Cup! Make sure you get a NaughTEA, it's got that kick you'll love! =)

I'm sorry, I just got to take a sip! It's Heavenly Blush!

This particular flavor was called Heavenly blush; and it was HEAVENLY! (sorry but no matter how that plays, I just got to say that! LOL) The smell of Jasmine Tea was very strong, soothing and very fragrant. The lychee flavor hints was a perfect match for this one. It would be nice to have this on a rainy afternoon while lounging around the comforts of your home. It was awesome! I told you to get extra Tapioca Pearls right?! Love it!

Peachsicle Milk Tea

With it's Jasmine Tea base you still get that fragrant undertones we experienced with the first one and the Peach gives you that sweet - not too tangy flavor as with the fruit. It was easy and obviously very good; and I even took it home. I wouldn't finish everything if it weren't that awesome!

So the next time you pass by Bon AppeTEA, make sure you grab something from the NaughTEAs line. If you haven't been partying yet, this might be a great thing to start your evening with. Milk Tea's for the ones driving though LOL! You can even ask them to adjust the sweetness of your Tea's just as long as you let them know. I am a new fan!

For those in the South, don't despair! The Better Living Paranaque branch will be opening on soon on September 27, 2011. Remember the date! Make sure you head on this bigger, grander store that makes LOVE from tea leaves.

Fashion + Music + Style = Terranova®

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

It's that posh upper east side looking/European pegged, relaxed, dark, street wear brand known the world over that we saw last week in SM Mall of Asia. It was street wear, urban, dark, nostalgic but very very apt for women who goes for shades of gray/black. The small Men's line that they have had quite a number of pieces you can use for everyday easy travel or use it somewhat for that grunge look. This brand... is TERRANOVA®.

I must say, I was impressed with what they have inside the store.

Impressive tops, overall dresses, small shirts, the list just goes on and on. Took a tour around this huge store that's got great prints, accessories to die for! It was really good to see something this grand in the third largest mall in the world!

There were also celebrities spotted on the store's relaunch. Wanna take a look?!

Yes it's Say Alonzo! =)

Ms. Say Alonzo-Tordesillas of famed Pinoy Big Brother! She was actually shopping for jackets, dresses and a couple of pieces for layers. She was really nice. Sorry we spied on your shopping though LOL!

Somedaydream and an International DJ provided great music in the launch!

Hunky, cutie Somedaydream from Mecca Music gave a few great numbers in the delight of everyone at the launch. Soothing and very electro pop infused we all had a blast listening to this VERY talented guy. His fashion sense is impressive too. Champ and his brother was there, it was raining good looking guys... wish you were there ladies! =)

R&B Princess Kyla was there!

This is my second time to meet Kyla and of course she was so nice! Just look at her outfit, it definitely follows the same look as Terranova. What's cute was she was there shopping with his fiance. Cute couple! They got a couple of shirts and shawls. The statement shirts from Terranova were very nice! Even the superhero prints were awesome!

Everyone had a great time in the store launch! I'm sure this will mark a big chunk out of your wallet come shopping time. This is also perfect because the holidays are near. It's Fashion, Music and Style all in One Awesome place! This is Terranova®.

Superb Beats by Dr. Dre!

Monday, September 19, 2011

If you are someone who seeks high-quality audio reproduction via the use of specialized high-end audio electronics, so close that you want it to actually sound like the real thing; then by all means you are what they call an AUDIOPHILE. I've tried a ton of head phones, ear phones and ear plugs in the past and with all these things I spent I need to satisfy my ears with cans that can take the beating even on full blast! People have been looking for the same thing over the years and in one lazy afternoon I was in luck! I got to see it!

Beats by Dr. Dre, definitely NOT your Father's Headphone!

Stars in Hollywood, musicians, producers and artists all have the same brand in mind for the best headphones in the market. Is it just a hype? Is it just plain branding that got it to where it is right now? I had my reservations initially because in my books I HAD TO TRY IT FIRST before I tell people if it's worth it. The market is flooded with imitations of it and those fail miserably. This is the REAL DEAL so getting one connected on my gadgets was just the perfect way to do it. They've got these for show!
White, Black and Red Beats by Dr. Dre. Shiiiiiny!

Unboxing the Beats

The Beats by Dr. Dre box contains common manuals (which you always should read!), warranty information, batteries, cleaning cloth, a very large box with Dr. Dre's image on it and the headphones that were fit inside a nice hard carrying case. There are 2 cables (black one and red one wherein the black has a microphone and red doesn't tangle), a quarter inch adapter for high quality audio equipment, an airline adapter for obvious uses. One good thing to note was the case itself was built a little hard than usual to protect the headphones; and it will definitely do the job. It's actually covered with metal inside so you are sure the sudden bumps and day to day mishaps won't damage the awesome headphones. For sure it'll be protected!

Listening with Beats by Dr. Dre

Then this time it goes to the best part of it all, how's the sound quality? How does it fare connecting it to one of the most popular gadgets this side of the world... the IPAD2?!

For starters, people were already looking at me when I got the beats. Design wise it's the best looking headphones in the market. I've even seen some customized for famous people and it's not a joke getting your hands on them. Took it for a spin with some of the great tracks that I have on my IPAD2. The degree of accuracy of Beats by Dr Dre. emits the original sound waves of the track is quite impressive. I've tried different genres like House, R&B, Pop and just plain BASE music. It fared pretty well on them all. I even tried pumping up the volume to maximum so I could get a feel if it degrades quality when in full blast. I used music files that are on a 128 kbit/s bit rate; it's what tracks usually are in. It didn't even disrupt on the high or base tones. The back end acoustics were also very detailed. It is quite remarkable that it lived up to its name; no wonder people trust this brand among others!

More Beats by Dr. Dre Features

Noise Cancellation

This is one of the greatest noise-cancelling over-ear headphones made by Monster. I have seen quite a couple of them (other brands) that offer this but it really doesn't do the job. You could still hear some things most of the time but for purists like me it would be better if you get a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre, the time I tried it I couldn't hear people were already talking about me. It's that seriously effective. The sleek and modern design of it didn't sacrifice quality.
Mute Button
It's something integrated on the headphones and what it basically does is turn off the sound when you need to. You can do it conveniently without actually taking off the headphones. If it's just some quick interruptions or something you want to listen to aside from music, that's just the smart thing invented on this piece of hardware. The Beats by Dr. Dre logo actually functions as the mute button, isn't that nice?! =)

You can Fold it! It fits snugly to the case and can easily be folded. There's no question about how convenient this is for people on the go or have a very active lifestyle.

The Verdict

Beats by Dr. Dre is the best affordable professional consumer headphones. It's design, quality and capability to mimic live music is phenomenal as attested by artists, producers and me. How else could you go wrong with that?! There is no other headphone in the market that has the style it surely has! Get those awesome Beats by Dr. Dre, there's no other brand that can compare!
Here's More! Beatbox
If you are tired of just isolating yourself from the outside world, you can easily share your music with nothing else but the best speaker unit for your iphone or itouch units. Ladies and gentlemen, the BEATBOX!
It's the greatest multi speaker system that you can carry around because it is in a small compact box. Perfect for parties and enjoying music with your friends and family. It's time to share your music, get the beatbox!
