SmartSAT: Smart's New Satellite Phones and Services

Tuesday, September 22, 2015

When disaster strikes, are you prepared? Are you really ready for the big one?

Well, we got schooled about that a few days ago when Smart hooked us up for an Emergency Management Center Workshop at the New World Hotel in Makati City. The Philippines belong in the Pacific Ring of Fire where a large number of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and Typhoons take place every year. During Typhoon Yolanda, the provinces of Samar and Leyte suddenly became disconnected from the rest of the Philippines. There weren't any infrastructure that was left standing in some parts of the province and people had no idea what happened in different places. It was like the blind leading the blind. It was a realization, that sometimes, the worst could actually happen. Without communication, it was hard to asses the situation, it was hard to find people, it was hard to look and send help.

Eventually, we were able to get through that hardship, and we learned quite a lot about the essentials, what to do in case we were in that situation. We also got the 214 on Satellite Phones and how much the services cost when you get it through Smart SAT.

These are two phones, one is the SatSleeve which have compatible phone sizes for iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and Samsung S4. The other one is a Thuraya XT, manufactured by a mobile satellite communications company with the same name who partnered with the biggest network in the Philippines SMART Communications. The SatSleeve can last a total of 36 hours (in standby time) and the Thuraya XT on the other hand can last up to 80 hours (in standby time) which means you can use it for days when disaster strikes and communication bogs down. From the looks of the coverage area, I think the only one they didn't include is the US (although some island territories are), north and south America, the north and south pole (Artic and Antartic with some bodies of water). You can check the list of countries here.

It costs Php 38,500 which is already pre-loaded with 225 units which is about Php 10,000 worth of airtime credits. The credits expire in a year and you have to top up credits again so your number won't expire. You can also get this cash or at 0% interest if you have credit cards with their partner banks on 12/24 month installments. If you think about it, it almost costs the same as the normal smartphones today. Good news is, it's perfect for travelers because the call and text rates on these prepaid phones cost way cheaper than roaming rates plus you can get credits in different denominations like 35 units = Php 1,575.00, 100 units = Php 4,500.00, 250 units = Php 11,250.00. You may check out information about SmartSAT Plans here for more information.

They also have docks, Thuraya IP+ (which is a mobile data and satellite terminal for Internet!), solar panels that can get your gadgets on even in the most difficult situations. That's living the Smart Life!

P.S. Oh by the way, this was also the instance where I met one of my blog idols Ms. Tina Tagle. Unfortunately you won't get to read her previous blogs (which were super cool btw!) but she writes now at her new site and jewelry design haven She Did It Anyway aka Willow Jewelry. I don't know how to tell you why, but just by reading her entries in the past, I've grown to love her and all her kids. She was even prettier in person! Totally, I turned into a fanboy right there (I kept telling my seatmates when I saw her enter the room!). Also to Ms. C (of Chuvaness.com), it was an awesome time to connect and talk with you again! I'm sure there will be another time! Hopefully real soon!

Good Pizza, Pasta and Mean Wings at North Wing MNL

If you haven't been to Maginhawa, you're really missing a lot. During our short event located at this street in Quezon City, owners Louise De los Reyes, Arianne Bautista and their partners showed us around their restaurant called North Wing MNL. As you can tell, their specialty is chicken wings and I absolutely loved what I had during that time.

Their interiors are simple, much like a small coffee shop with shabby chic tables and chairs. They've also got picnic tables, faux grass inside so it's like taking the outdoors indoors. I could tell they're probably getting this jazzed up like a tailgate before a football game in the US. As for the food, here are some of their best sellers!

This is North Wing's Innkeeper. It's got onions, mushroom, pepperoni and olives. It's best eaten while it's hot so right after they place it on your table, go ahead and indulge!

This one's their Margarita. It's simple, just cheese, basil and tomatoes. Effective, I also like the others but it wasn't served so that's what we'll probably have next time. It's good though, especially when it's hot!

Sweet Chili Chicken Wings and Hellfire - The sweet chili wings had something herby, probably parsley so it was different. I liked two of the flavors specifically and the hellfire is one of them. Another thing to note is THEY KNOW how to fry chicken. They're not amateurs in that department. The Hellfire isn't as spicy as I want to but you can always have them customize to your preference.

Garlic Cheddar and Barbecue Chicken Wings - My favorite is the Garlic Cheddar. They did it with flare and I could taste the intense garlic plus the lovely butter flavor when I bit off the chicken. That's a mark of a well seasoned wing. The other one would be fancied by kids as it's sweet and smoky. Honestly I thought they were just going to be mediocre, but they know how to cook Chicken Wings right. Mind you, I've tried tons of wing places in my lifetime and theirs is one of the best!
North Wing MNL is located at 95 Maginhawa Street, Teacher's Village in Quezon City. You can opt to call (02) 8992140 / 0916-7188866 / 0917-5920901 for events/reservations. Or you can always walk in as they're open from 11AM to 11PM (sometimes even later than that). They've got pizza, pasta and really mean Chicken Wings. Make sure you drop by this lovely place and who knows, Arianne and Louise might be there to also say hi!

OMG! There's this new series coming on cable channel RTL-CBS called LIMITLESS which YOU should defintely watch out for! Jake McDorman is so good in this action filled semi futuristic TV program that talks about a guy who just wants to be someone, save his dad from a genetic disease, and get ahead of his career and change the way he lives his life. He's also up to avenge the death of his hest friend that taught him all about a secret pill that can make things happen. He's been seeing a couple or more people excel in a work place and found out that they too are using these pills for their own gains. He needs it to fulfill his dream, and make his Dad better so he tries to get more, or get to the source.

He stumbles upon a guy that could make it happen in a more permanent basis, accepts his offer and tries to do a few things for him. He also gets taken cared of by authorities and soon, he'll slowly get confused about his loyalty if it's going to be with his new found friends in the FBI/Secret Service or the man who got him cured from all the side effects of the pill.

You'll love the first episode, and best of all, the guy portraying the lead as Brian Finch aka struggling songwriter and one man band doesn't look bad either. You'll get hooked with the story, so make sure you watch the premier come September 22nd on RTL-CBS! You'll never ever see the letters NZT the same way again!
