EPSON and John Herrera does ARMADA

I was fortunate enough to have seen the last collection that EPSON and John Herrera worked on and eventually won with during London Fashion Week. It was named AGILA after the majestic Philippine Eagle (aka Monkey Eating Eagle) which now is the national bird of the Philippines. John Herrera was just like most of you, when he began with this process he wasn't much of a techie. He didn't have the know how on doing prints and designing and style was just his talent. He needed help in making his analog talent be translated to digital art which EPSON provided a platform for. Mind you it wasn't easy, but as you may know, there's no stopping a talented Filipino.

He was very candid, no frills, very humble when we met him. We discussed his latest work over tea and if you're a fan of his work, you could sense his collection has that signature John Herrera look. The cuts, the lines somehow had similarities with his previous work and you could note how it actually looks more modern now, more structured but still feminine. We laughed a bit when he told us if he could wear these pieces, he would. It all looks so gorgeous even if we didn't see it worn by models that afternoon.

Here's what he said during our interview:

"They first told me to do prints, I initially said no, but I got inspired and used visual images that did have an impact. I felt I came from the ice age, a bit primitive when it comes to technology. In this collection, I worked with digital artists to churn out my vision for printing. This collection was easier than the last one because we knew the process already. We didn't have problems anymore." 

In describing this series he adds "The collection is about the Spanish armada, it was the map where ships, the coat of arms of the Spanish king, the small lines, we blew it up and made it into black, white and gray lines. I had to re-layout so it would show up on the clothes. The collection had me thinking about the discovery of the Philippines. You will see capes, coats, a little like what they wore during their trip to the Philippines. I always dreamed of this and I don't think I'll ever have to buy prints because their printers are incredible."

"I adore these pieces and they have made sure the ink they used is earth friendly which is mostly from plant pigments - and even safe for babies. It's also acid free and breathes with our body, you can feel it in the fabric. All of them are printed as I create, some are complicated and you'll see it even better when they move. Some of these are quite simple,  even if it was made easy it still looks good. We diminished making the back seams and that is a difficult process in designing."

"I personally am not a colorful person, it was just like making it like how the voyagers used to wear. It's something that I think London women would also wear, even if all of these are being designed in the tropics. Epson has a list of synthetic fibers that I could work with, it can print on organza and tool. Now I can print on transparent and flowy textile, during fitting it was majestic on the model. The lack of digital knowledge was just the problem, but everything else was solved by Epson and my team."

 

"This is my 25th collection and it's a mix of creatives and wearables. I make the garment stand without much bulk, the process is now easy because of technology. We can make this easy in patterns now. You always have to learn things, you never stop learning."

I also asked him about vying for another contest with these pieces but he says "There are times you have to stop joining competitions because it will be counter productive to your brand. This is meant for people to wear. It's not easy, in the beginning we just had to be known. I'm glad Vogue noticed so that opened a lot of doors for me. September 16, Fashion Scout will be streaming it live and Epson will stream it live again including the johnherreraofficial facebook page where you will see the BTS from time to time."

Some Cool Urban Pieces from NOIX Gear

I'm not basic (thank God!), or at least I don't think so. I like cool clothes and sometimes play with it. So since I'm doing a whole day of blogging today, I'll include this new brand called NOIX. It's pronounced as it is spelled, so in a nutshell you have to say the letter x haha. Anyway, this cool new brand has already been released in the market last August 16, 2017. I look good on it obviously and their aesthetics fit me. I guess it's more urban than plain street style, just the way I like it.

The 10th Year of Gabay Guro: A Decade of Dedication and A Lifetime ofGratitude

This is the 10th year of Gabay Guro and it's one of the most awaited events by teachers in the country. This is the PLDT SMART Foundation's way of thanking the most selfless people on earth, and our second parents, our teachers. My Mom is an educator too so I know how much they have sacrificed all these years so you can go out of school learning something, that takes a lot of heart.

Gary Duhali of PLDT says "This is our biggest activity for our biggest event on our 10th year of Gabay Guro. 10 years of our Education arm of the Pldt Smart Foundation. We churn out programs and activities for teachers, we provide training programs, and they clamour for skills and now we have trained 20,000 teachers for free. We did it in Baguio, Bicol, nationwide and don't get anything for return. We also teach them livelihood programs that support their own students who are in need. We make them resellers outside of the classroom, and they don't have to use their checks anymore. We also have donated internet connection, computers, even whole classrooms. We also have 1123 scholarship grants, now having 650 graduates, 300 LET passers and over 45 partner schools making sure we have teachers in the future. We gather 20,000+ teachers and devote one day for an event last year and we are doing that again with the participation of the country's biggest performers and give prizes to change their lives. All our pillars are the driving force for Gabay Guro. Next Sunday, September 17 we want to impart a decade of dedication and a lifetime of gratitude. Only teachers will enjoy the festivities for free at the SM MOA ARENA at 2PM. Hosts will be Pia Wurtzbach, Andrew Wolf and Pops Fernandez. They have also been supporting Gabay Guro for years now. LGU's let us also use their facilities for free, plus the DEP ED also helps us pinpoint which provinces need training help. We are also thankful for the celebrities and performers who gave their time and talent and even invite their friends as this isn't a branded event, just Gabay Guro so everyone is willing to help despite their busy schedules."

Angel Locsin Shocks La Luna Sangre Viewers Worldwide

Did you see the episode last night? How can you not be when Angel Locsin suddenly appeared in La Luna Sangre. 

"From the start, we knew that Angel was going back to La Luna Sangre. We just had to surprise everyone. We just don't know if John Lloyd's appearance will happen too. She is not a guest but a main character of the show. They are in the story, this is a KathNiel project but each individual character has their own the story. Darating at darating yan at di maiiiwasan sa La Luna Sangre. There are a lot of theories and this is something that people should be excited for. She will be here until she is still needed, and thank you to KathNiel and all the supporters of the show for making this great, anything can happen because this is a fantaserye." - Henry Kingkitain, head Creative Director for Star Creatives. 

Angel Locsin says "I am very proud to have been able to guest here, I was needed in the story and I'm very happy to support a new breed of stars in this series. I am very excited because I don't know what is going to happen with the Jacintha character and there are still a lot of things to happen in this Fantaserye. They told me to get ready because there will be fight scenes. It was explained to me, what my connection is to Richard. I am so happy to be with someone that I am comfortable with, Richard matured and is passionate and it doubled now. They call him baby boy because they really want to take care of him.  Jacintha is full of mysteries, she was able to make a President win in Indonesia so she will be helping Chard win the presidency in the Philippines too. She is human, she speaks her mind, it's good to be back working with Chard and it was easier to do this because we know each other. I haven't worked with him yet in our movie (with Angelica Panganiban) and who knows we might get into a scene again like the previous shows. She's a very gray character and it will be tiring to switch, I'll show a different person so the audience could appreciate it. Marian and I have no rifts and we both want to entertain people. There was a huge debate on the name from Lotlot, Marikit, but a few of the execs saw how Jacintha was effective to pronounce."

"I also am a lot better now because I know how to sit properly, and it's been a while since I felt pain (in her back). I am more relaxed now, not too pressured because I have been with the crew for a few years and they took care of me. I am willing to do all the things needed for the show. I told Kathryn about it and it was a huge secret, and she replied with really great words and tons of emoticons so I guess she's very happy about it. For all the people who watched, thank you so much for making it trend last night. I hope you see how we're going to make this an even greater story!" she adds.

She will be one of the main characters and surely this will be an interesting twist of events. You'll love Angel Locsin all over again, like I do so stay tuned!
