DRAGON BALL SUPER: BROLY Opens January 30 at SM Cinemas

Friday, January 18, 2019

I am a die hard Dragon Ball fan. I only know a few people who have this much gusto compared to me and it's been a while since I have heard of Brawley. For those who don't know, he's not a new character because I have personally seen his saga when he was drawn by Akira Toriyama in 1993. I watched it my friends by buying a Betamax copy those years (ask your parents) and he has caught my attention since then.

He was dubbed the "Legendary Super Saiyan" and showed unfathomable brute strength against Goku before his said father Paragus control his temper. Vegetta thought he was getting a new kingdom, but didn't know the one who is destroying other planets was Brawley himself. That ended with a strong battle, Goku claiming victory as he was sent energy by all the Z Warriors and Vegetta (who was the reluctant enemy that time and got beaten up too).

This 2018, they have had some sort of a parallel universe and will start on after the recent Tournament of Power where almost everyone got erased from the face of the universes. Goku as usual won that but will have to face a different kind of Brawley, as he is drawn differently, powered with more rage and lies by Frieza. You will have to watch how this all happens on January 30, 2019 as it is exclusively shown in SM Cinemas. Trust me, this will be good.

I hope these DBZ warriors don't die.

GSK Employees Spend Time with Smile Train Beneficiaries

I have always regarded these people as purposed workers, those who extend a hand, go over and beyond their 4 corner office and do something beneficial for those who need it most.

Last year, November 23, about 400 Glaxo Smith Kline employees went to visit some of their partner organizations 16 Gawad Kalinga sites and two Smile Train facilities as part of their Orange Day efforts. Their company allows one paid day off a year so they can help in one authorised charity activity. This one in photo was the Smile Train facility in Sta. Mesa Manila wherein they visited people with cleft palate conditions, most of which they were able to help have surgeries then have speech therapy from Craniofacial Foundation of the Philippines and totally changed their way of life. It is one of their passions, volunteering per se is GSK's way of creating positive and sustainable change in communities. They too will benefit from it as they bring new energy back and learn from these experiences to GSK.

GSK continues to plan fund raising activities and have their employees pledge to spend time with these beneficiaries as they commemorate their 50th year in the Philippines. A milestone worth celebrating as they make more Filipinos do more, live better, longer.

Chef Laudicos x Kitchen Mafia at Guevarras

I've been following their careers as restaurateurs, chefs, in and out of TV. Husband and wife Chef Roland and Chef Jac are no strangers in Philippine kitchens, and they've been doing a good job doing what they do best, showcase our cuisine in their restaurants and to the rest of the world. I have also been able to see them on Asian Food Channel a couple of times, plus form friendships with chefs from other ASEAN countries. Remember AFC's Amazing Food Challenge: Fun in the Philippines? That's where the Laudicos met Malaysian Celebrity Chef Sherson Lian. Well he was in the country last December together with his Kitchen Mafia business partner Chef Johnny Fua. They figured they're already here so what better way to give back their time learning Filipino cuisine from the Laudicos by working with them again this 2018, to introduce a whole line of dishes in hopes of getting them be a part of the menu featured in Chef Laudico's very own restaurant GUEVARRAS.

Filipino Breads with Adobo Pate, Dried Mango Chutney, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Sinamak

Chef Sherson finds a lot of similarities between ours and Malaysian cuisine. The produce may be a little different but the functions are the same. The goal is, to get what they usually cook in their home turf but use Filipino ingredients. He finds this a most exciting opportunity. Chef Johnny on the other hand thinks this is a good way to learn, to learn ideas from other chefs and be in someone else's kitchen so they can cook with Filipino ingredients and still find balance in its flavors.

Tanigue and Kerabu

This is Tanigue and Kerabu made of flour breaded Spanish Mackerel with Green Mango Kerabu in Coconut vinegar and crushed roasted cashews. Golden fried stuff with crunchy and tangy green mangoes and carrots, it's a play on textures and temperatures. They usually use calamansi in Malaysia buy used Vinegar this time as souring agent. Delish!

Kuah Lodeh

This is their Kuah Lodeh, a light coconut and turmeric based soup with Suahe as protein and slivers of Kamias fruit, crispy bean curd skin, Alamang Sambal and Pako. This had a light refreshing taste even with the intense spices used in the dish. They also air dried bagoong Alamang for the Sambal which you can use to mix in the soup if you want a more spicy kick.

Beef Rendang

The main course was phenomenal. This is their Beef Rendang made of slow roasted Angus beef in Rendang sauce with an enveloped black rice with Gata and Pechay. This made me full in minutes. They used intense pungent flavors on the almost fall off the bone beef chunk. You can try to resist the black rice, but you will also fail. Give in and nourish yourself with this Malaysian staple.

Cendol Leche Flan Cake

Chef Jac whipped up her version of the popular Malaysian Cendol. Pandan sponge layers, rice flour jelly, Cendol mixed in coconut Pana cotta and layers of Leche Flan and Pandan cake. It was the perfect way to end the meal.

This is now officially part of GUEVARRAS menu until February 3 so for those who would want to check out these masterpieces from the chefs, go run to Chef Laudico Guevarra's at 387 P. Guevarra corner Argonne Streets, Addition Hills San Juan City. Their buffet rates only cost PHP 599 per person on weekdays, PHP 699 on weekends and holidays. The experience seeing two chefs from different countries appreciate our produce and cooking it in their style made me want to experience more of these fusions, I can't wait to be there again soon!

Take the trip, I'll be there to celebrate my Sister's birthday a few days from now. Food is good, prepared from scratch, no msg too.

Xian Lim and Louise Delos Reyes for HANGGANG KAILAN

Thursday, January 17, 2019

I am a KimXi fan but I’m glad both Xian Lim and Kim Chiu are doing projects separately; and being good at it. Viva Films, Saga Prefecture Film Commission, BLUART Productions and XL8 are cooperating and releasing this new film called HANGGANG KAILAN? (Until When?) directed by Bona Fajardo. The premise is, how two people would say goodbye before they call it quits in their relationship? (In one last trip) How does one really say goodbye? Interesting? I bet.

This is the story of Donnie and Kath played by Xian Lim and Louise Delos Reyes, two people who have been together for two years, but agreed to spend their last days as a couple. For 4 days and 3 nights, they are forced to stay in Saga, Japan. With picturesque landscapes and interesting cultures, they happen to know they need to be apart after the trip. If it will it happen or not, that is what you’ll see in this movie.

Bona Fajardo says “We call this as is because of the situation of the relationship. It wasn’t an accident, but they were just caught in a different place when they decided. It wasn’t planned at all. Most of the talk is made by them to explain the scene, this film had to make them do next level things.”

Xian says “We will tackle questions to ourselves, to ask if we are doing a good thing. Louise didn’t talk much, she’s very reserved at first but very game later on. Making this film wasn’t instructional, we had free hand most of the time. I did produce this as well and I have wished to do this for a long time. When I did production in the past, it wasn’t like this. I loved the story so I explored and became part of the process. It is so good to spend time in Viva and Blueart. The scenes were planned ahead, we talked for hours about it. We felt comfortable, it was collaborative when we had to do that matured scene. I hope people don’t concentrate on that though because it is just one of the needed things. You ask yourself if what you are doing is right, until when will you do it. My character stands on what could be 4 last days of our relationship. He got caught, Donny had choices. Expect very heavy dialogue heavy scenes. This is more of a drama.”

Louise adds “Xian is refreshing to work with, it was suddenly offered to me so we didn’t have time to get along or know each other. He is much of a gentleman, an artist, he also has inputs in this film. We only had a week because of the event we need to do in the movie. We had to do love scenes, it was my first time there and I had realizations when I was working with them. I hope you get to see all the scenes we did there. We shot in Saga Japan and had to see the Balloon Festival. Kath is a free spirited person, I admire her struggles and how she wanted to give up even if he loves the person so much. We both have conflicts, it’s not about the feelings alone, it’s the journey.”

Hanggang Kailan will show on theaters nationwide starting February 6. The two sends their wishes for you to watch their film, now will you?
